Up again at 5:30am with even a better night’s sleep and we were in at the Copano Bay Causeway and in the water by 7:30am. We went to Sea Gun for bait – only had Live Shrimp available – that’s okay. I threw the cast net at the ramp for some croaker. I got few, but mostly I was catching 26-30 size shrimp! Well, we already had some, and it’s illegal to take shrimp from Copano Bay, anyway. ….read about the rest of the day

First of all, I have known Mike for over 25 years, and this is actually the first time that we have fished together, to the best of my recollection.

Second of all, this weekend was prefaced by an extreme amount of rain and flooding, not only in the Hill Country and San Antonio, but the Rockport area had seen 10″ of rain over the past several days. The forecast was miserable, but we packed our rain gear, and went for it. Several fishing reports that I was able to observe indicated that the bays were turning brackish, but the fish were still hangin’ around. Another note is that it seems that the rain and floods had reduced the water temperature about five degrees since our last visit, a couple of weeks ago. ….read about the rest of the evening

Redfish Bay / Estes Flats, TX

Weather : Moderate – highs in the low eighties, cloudy with scattered thunderstorms and showers, winds 8 to 20 mph, E to S depending on the passing storms.
Surface Water Temp : about 86 degrees
Team : Mark, Roger, Kevin

Another amazing show for this crew, up at 6:30am and in the water at about 8:30am. The ramp on the south side of Cove Harbor is shut for parking lot repairs. We headed over Palm Harbor where I learned the ramp is there no more – it’s all a trailer park. By asking some passer’s by, we were directed to the North entrance of Cove harbor, where we found a wonderful facility and boat ramp. Gee, if it was a snake, I’d be dead! ….read about the rest of the day

Night Fish / Black Drum – Copano Bay, TX

Portage: Copano Bay Causeway – Rockport, Tx
General Area : Copano Bay
Moon : 99% Waxing (full)
Weather : Night time – partly cloudy, scattered showers and thunderstorms (nearby). winds at 8-12 mph, Southerly
Surface Water Temp : about 86 degrees
Team : Mark, Roger, Kevin

After a surprisingly early start from Austin, we found ourselves crossing the Copano Bay Causeway during daylight at about 8:00 – 8:30 pm, and decided to put in and try for the big Black Drum that is typical fare after dark at Fred’s Pier. The Copano Causway State Park baithouse had plenty of live shrimp and dead shrimp (the bait of my choice for night fishing drum) so provisioning and put-in was expedient. It is noted that the tide was really high, likely amplified by the Easterly prevailing winds resulting from the tropical flow to a stationary low pressure system, that BTW is resulting in some amazing flooding in the Hill Country, and North Texas. ….read about the rest of the evening

Redfish – Copano Bay, TX

Date: May 20, 2007 Sunday

Surface Water Temp : about 73 degrees
Team : Mark, Roger, Jason

Another late start 8:30a, putting in at the Copano Bay Causeway State Park. The winds were forecast to subside, however we were not impressed with the improvement. The winds were still Easterly and brisk which effectively scrubbed any venture to the West end of Copano Reef. So the usual targets were on the agenda. …. read about the rest of the day

Redfish Bay / Estes Flats, TX

Portage: Cove Harbor – Rockport, Tx

Moon : 12 % Waxing
Weather : Cool – Highs in the mid 80′s, partly cloudy. Winds out of the East at 10 – 16 mph.
Surface Water Temp : about 73 degrees
Team : Mark, Roger, Jason

The Trout are advertised to be spawning and the Menhaden are coming into the bays. There are many reports of good stringers of Speckled Trout in the previous week. The past several weeks had been disturbed by high winds resulting from simultaneous weather systems tracking through the midwest. This weekend was the first weekend since that winds allowed for reasonable navigation, according to reports. Nonetheless, 15 mph winds were not optimum. As such, the original float plan to run north of Traylor Island and work NE towards Mud Island was pretty much scrapped for a morning/afternoon in Estes Flats. ….read about the rest of the day
